Groundhog Day is a strange little holiday. It’s part folklore, part weather prediction, and entirely committed to a groundhog doing one job very seriously. It’s also the premise of one of my favorite movies, Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray—a film about repetition, routine, and getting stuck reliving the same moment until you decide to make a change.
Or, as Phil Connors puts it: “You want a prediction about the weather, you’re asking the wrong Phil. I’ll give you a winter prediction: It’s gonna be cold, it’s gonna be grey, and it’s gonna last you for the rest of your life. “
That movie became the spark for my design, Groundhog Day Damask, a folk-inspired surface pattern design built around the concept of repetition with intention. Traditional damask structure, storybook motifs, and a holiday that literally celebrates repetition.

A couple of years ago, Groundhog Day Damask went on to win first place in Spoonflower’s “Other Holidays” design challenge, which felt like a pretty good sign I was onto something.
From One Pattern to a Full-On Déjà Vu Situation
I loved the original design enough to keep coming back to it, over and over and over and over. Heh. This year, I decided it was time to expand the pattern into a full collection, adding coordinating prints and new colorways in honor of the holiday. Because if you’re going to relive the same day over and over again, you might as well have options.
The Groundhog Day Damask collection now includes:
- The original award-winning damask
- Additional hero plus blenders and coordinates
- 4 new colorways
Each coordinate was designed to support the hero pattern without stealing the spotlight—ensemble cast energy, not main-character syndrome.

Folk Art, Whimsy, Geometry, and Jokes
This collection draws from folk art, storybook illustration, and geometric design, blending ornate and minimal elements so the patterns feel playful but grounded. It’s fun, seasonal and structured without being stiff.
Think less “the same thing again,” more “I’m reliving this, but it’s… better?”

Designed for Spoonflower (And People Who Notice Details)
All designs in the Groundhog Day Damask collection are available on Spoonflower, printed on fabric, wallpaper, and home décor products. Whether you’re sewing, decorating, or quietly evaluating your life choices while ordering wallpaper samples, these patterns are designed to repeat beautifully and hold up over time.
