Somewhere between an arched gothic cathedral window and a bat screeching through the woods, The Grande Macabre pattern found its shape, and it just won 5th place!
I started with pointed arches — a fave of mine – the pointed, ribbed kind on ancient cathedrals, carved of centuries-old stone. I added creepy gargoyles, skulls, moths, flying owls and bats, until the whole thing filled in like ivy on a ruin. Celtic knotwork stitches the panels together. It’s ornate almost to the point of excess, which is my aesthetic. I wanted something that looked like it belonged in a vintage black and white scary movie.
I rendered it in several colorways, but the one I entered was Twilight Blue, with just enough contrast to let the gargoyles and gothic creatures loom forward. It’s the kind of print you have to look at twice – if you dare – to catch everything.
I entered it into Spoonflower’s Opulent Halloween design challenge. Out of 927 entries, The Grande Macabre placed 5th. This is my 9th top-ten finish on Spoonflower. Good gravy that sure feels good!
The shop is open!
And, I’m taking this moment to finally launch an online shop. The Grande Macabre (and many other designs) are now part of a full product line. No AI, obviously.
If you’ve been waiting for an excuse to dress like a haunted cathedral, this is it.
