Rochelle Weiner Carr
In this online portfolio of collections and designs, I mix a selection of my skills in graphic design and fine art to present a fresh view in surface pattern design.
I like intense colors, contrast, geometry, and a level of artistic messiness. I really love it when you can see the hand of the artist in their work. I draw inspiration from foreign cultures, bygone eras and the natural world. My style layers drawings, textures, bold colors, irregular marks and rich textures to render unique designs with a hint of wit and charm.
In 2023 I launched my business in surface pattern design by publishing this website (designed and built by me), and opened a shop on Spoonflower and Society6. New to the industry, I challenged myself to enter the weekly design challenges at Spoonflower.com as a way to learn the business, inform myself on trends, connect with others in the industry and just get a feel for how this all works. What a great idea this turned out to be – much more than achieving the above, I’ve met and connected with an amazing community of like minded artists who have been so incredibly welcoming, encouraging and generous with knowledge. On top of that, these challenges have quickly filled my portfolio with new concepts and collections, nearly all of which placed in the top 25% in the challenges. My best placed designs are listed below, including 1st place, 5th, 14th , 16th, 16th, and 18th place spots.
